How to measure a t-shirt?

How to measure a T-shirt to choose the right size

Choosing a T-shirt isn't just about the size displayed on a label.
It's about the cut, the drape, the comfort.
And above all, about accurate measurements.

At Bleu mon Jules, we believe in pieces that last.
And for a T-shirt to stay with you for a long time, it needs to fit you really well.

Here's how to measure a T-shirt simply, at home, in a few minutes.

Necessary equipment

Before starting, nothing complicated.

• Your favorite T-shirt, the one that fits just right
• A tape measure (dressmaker's tape measure), or a flat ruler if not available
• A flat, rigid surface: table or floor

Step 1: properly prepare the T-shirt

Lay your T-shirt flat.
Smooth the fabric with your hands to remove wrinkles.

Important:
Do not pull on the fabric.
A stretched T-shirt always skews measurements.

Step 2: the 3 key T-shirt measurements

1. Chest width

This is the most important measurement for comfort.

Where to measure:
Place the tape measure horizontally, just below the armholes, from one armpit seam to the other.

Good to know:
In size guides, this measurement is often called flat width.
If a website indicates a chest circumference, simply multiply your measurement by two.

2. Total length

This determines how the T-shirt drapes on the body.

Where to measure:
From the highest point of the shoulder, at the collar junction, down to the bottom of the T-shirt (the hem).

This measurement avoids unpleasant surprises after washing.

3. Shoulder width

Essential for a balanced cut.

Where to measure:
From one shoulder seam to the other, in a straight line across the upper back.

A well-adjusted shoulder width prevents a dropped-shoulder effect or, conversely, one that's too tight.

Summary table of T-shirt measurements

Measurement How to do it Why it's useful
Width Armpit to armpit Ensures the T-shirt doesn't constrict the chest
Length Shoulder to hem Avoids a too-short effect after washing
Shoulders Seam to seam Determines whether the cut is fitted or oversized

Bleu mon Jules pro tips

Never measure a worn T-shirt
Movements and fabric tension always distort the result.

Anticipate cotton
A 100% cotton T-shirt may shrink slightly.
Allow a margin of 1 to 2 cm, especially in length.

Always compare with the size guide
Report your measurements on the online store's guide before ordering.

Did you know?
A quality T-shirt often has reinforced shoulder seams.
This is what allows the cut to remain stable over time, wash after wash.

Measure well, choose better

Measuring a T-shirt means taking the time to choose a piece that will stay with you for a long time.
A good drape.
Just the right comfort.
And that feeling you never want to let go of.
