Gulf of Saint-Tropez Guide - Part 1

Do you think you know the Gulf of Saint-Tropez?

My name is Jules.
I was born here. And believe me, the Gulf is not told, it is earned.

So let's check that together.
Three levels.
Tourist. Local. Expert.

Ready?

Level 1 – Enlightened Tourist

The wrecks of Cavalaire Bay.

Beneath the turquoise waters of Cavalaire lie forgotten giants.
Cargo ships, military vessels, a French submarine, the Ruby, scuttled with honors in 1958. A Royal Navy plane. Even a torpedo boat whose ammunition still rests beneath the sand.

Today, everything is covered in algae. The rusted hulls have become artificial reefs. Multicolored fish have replaced the sailors.

This is not just a diving spot.
It's a submerged museum.
A blue secret that only those who descend beneath the surface can truly understand.

If you knew that, you're starting to shine.

Level 2 – Local

Fort-Freinet, the sentinel of the Gulf.

At 450 meters altitude, perched above the Maures, Fort-Freinet was not just a castle.

It was an entire village, carved into the rock in the 12th century.
Hand-dug moats.
Galleries.
Troglodytic dwellings.

A refuge. A fortress. A suspended world.

Even today, its ruins dominate the Gulf like a timeless sentinel. When the wind blows up there, you understand that the South is not just a postcard. It is a land of history and resistance.

If you go up there at sunrise, you move up to the next level.

Level 3 – Expert

The forgotten drama of Sainte-Maxime.

On the night of September 28 to 29, 1932, torrential rains struck the Gulf.
The Préconil overflowed.
Roads and rails were swept away.
Both bridges were destroyed.
Chaos descended on Sainte-Maxime.

Three years later, in 1935, the bridge was reborn.
Reconstructed by engineer Gibouin, in reinforced concrete, with an innovative technique for the time.

For almost a century, it has defied the waters.

Next time you cross it, look at it differently.
It's not just a bridge.
It's a scar that became a backbone.

That's the Gulf of Saint-Tropez.

Not just beaches.
Not just yachts.
But depths, ruins, storms and rebirths.

Head for a blue journey.

See you soon,
Jules
